Boys water polo: Newport hammers Irvine
IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team had little
trouble with host Irvine, winning, 16-1, in Sea View League action
Wednesday afternoon.
Ryan Cook and Peter Belden each scored six goals for the Sailors,
ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I. Greg Worthing, Steve
Jensrusina and Joey Snelgrove each added a single goal.
Cook also chipped in with four assists, while Jenrusina added three.
Newport jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half and never looked
back. Steven Johnson and Brendon McLain each had seven saves in goal for
the Sailors.
In junior varsity action, Newport Harbor took care of Irvine, 11-5.
Michael Vanderburg led the Sailors’ attack with four goals, while
Brent Armstrong added three. Goalie Alex Stabler had seven saves.
