Girls tennis: Dunlap knocks off another ranked opponent

NEWPORT BEACH - Two down, one more to go.

Vanessa Dunlap of Newport Beach knocked off her second ranked opponent

in as many days with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 5 seed Juliette

Mutzke Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the girls 14 singles at the

Junior Tennis Classic 2000 Tournament at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

To get to Friday’s finals, she has to knock off yet another ranked

opponent, No. 3 seed Amy Beck, today. Dunlap beat No. 2 seed Carolina

Velasco in the round of 32 Tuesday.

Mutzke of Newport Coast easily won the first set, 6-1, before Dunlap pulled out a close battle in the second set. After a lengthy break, she

took advantage of several unforced errors to win the match.

In the boys 14 singles quarterfinals, No. 2 Kaes Van’t Hof of Newport

Beach got a huge initial fight from No. 6 seed Jake Fleming of Corona del

Mar. With some well-placed shots, Fleming won the first set in

tiebreaker, 7-6.

But that set took its toll on Fleming. Van’t Hof won the second set

easily, 6-1, and he jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before

Fleming retired with a headache. Van’t Hof faces No. 3 seed Ryan Malawy

in the semifinals today.

Peter Kulmaticki, the No. 3 seed in the boys 16 singles, defeated

Nicholas Doan, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. The soon-to-be senior at

Corona del Mar High faces second-seeded John Mano today, at 2 p.m.

Ryan Caughren of Newport Beach, the top seed in the boys 10 singles,

has a semifinal match against Vivek Athalye today, courtesy of a 6-2, 6-4

victory over Alexander Johnson. In the same division, Parker Rhodes of

Corona del Mar was eliminated by second-seed Florante Sarmiento Jr., 6-3,

6-0.

Newport Beach’s Robert Khoury, the No. 5 seed in boys 12 singles,

advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 4 seed Andy Luo.

His next opponent is top-seed Walter Lau of Fountain Valley.

In girls 16 singles, Brittany Holland of Newport Beach continued her

impressive run with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Jenny Tortorea. She moves on to

the semifinals to face her second seeded opponent, No. 4 Kim Tran.

Holland defeated No. 6 Courtney Kay in the first round.

Megan Hawkins, a junior at Newport Harbor, was eliminated by No. 3

Camerin Barron-Sandman in the girls 16 quarterfinals. But she and partner

Erika Buder moved into the girls 14 doubles semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1

victory Johanna Phillips and Rachel Wong.
