Beginning with the anticipation of a new season and ending with
District 62 play, the 2000 Little League season featured many highlights
for the five area leagues. Here, then, is a sampling of some of those
highlights:
-Huntington Valley Little League, host of two District 62 tournaments
and the Section 4 tournament, unveiled its “Inspiration Field,” the
newly, refurbished Major Division field at Wardlow Park. Inspiration
Field was made possible by a generous grant from the Major League
Baseball Players Trust for Children, in honor of Mark McGwire’s
outstanding 1998 season, in which he became Major League Baseball’s
all-time single season home run leader. The field also was dedicated to
children past, present, and future, who ever dreamed of setting their own
records.
-For the first time since the 1996 season, a Fountain Valley team
(9/10 Division) won a District 62 All-Star title.
-When Robinwood defeated Westminster, 9-4, on July 19, it marked the
first time in seven years that the league’s Senior Division team won the
District 62 All-Star tournament.
-Ocean View won both the District 62 Tournament of Champions and the
District 62 All-Star Tournament in Majors Division play. It is the second
consecutive year that the league has won both Majors tournaments.
-Seaview Little League officials have received a grant of $16,840 from
the City of Huntington Beach to add another Coach/Pitch Division field to
their site at LeBard Park. It will give the league two Coach/Pitch
fields, to accommodate interest in the division.
-Ocean View’s Hammerin’ Hank Conger belted out 23 home runs during the
regular season, through District 62 All-Star play.
-One of the top coaches in the area is Seaview’s Mark Amaral, who
coached the league’s 9/10 Division All-Star team. During the regular
season, Amaral’s Mariners won Seaview’s Minor A Division title with a
19-1 record.
-Sectional play is taking place this week for several local All-Star
teams. The last time a local All-Star team won a Section championship was
Seaview in 1981.
