NEWPORT BEACH -- Real estate attorney John B. Heffernan has announced
plans to seek the City Council seat currently held by Councilman Tom
Thomson.
Heffernan pulled nomination papers late last week and plans to run as
a strong opponent of the Greenlight initiative, which would give voters
the final say on certain major developments.
“The fact that Greenlight has generated as much interest as it has
shows a lot of people don’t have faith in the City Council,” Heffernan
said Monday. “They don’t seem to have any sort of faith that elected
officials are doing their jobs.”
Also in the race for that seat are Thomson, the incumbent, and former
city manager Bob Wynn.
A total of four Newport Beach residents have pulled papers for three
spots on the council. In Costa Mesa, where there are also three open
seats, seven residents have pulled papers.
The deadline to file for candidacy in Newport Beach and in Costa Mesa
is Aug. 11.
Forms are available at Newport Beach City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.,
and Costa Mesa City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.
