NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED: The council voted to allow city staff draft an
agreement with Noble Consultants to rehabilitate the Newport and Balboa
piers.
WHAT IT MEANS: Noble Consultants will be paid $214,216 to inspect
and prepare plans for rehabilitating the piers. Currently the city has
funds available from the American Trader oil spill settlement to improve
the city’s oceanfront facilities. Ten projects to be funded by the
settlement have been approved. The top-priority projects are to
rehabilitate the 60-year-old piers. Deteriorated piles, timbers, concrete
decks, signage and other crumbling parts of the piers will be replaced.
VOTE: 5 IN FAVOR / 0 AGAINST
WHAT HAPPENED: Ernie Bain was appointed to the Environmental
Quality Affairs Citizen Advisory Committee.
WHAT IT MEANS: Councilman Tom Thomson appointed Ernie Bain as a
District 7 representative to the committee. In addition, the at-large
District 7 representative, Anthony Bartolic, has resigned, creating
another vacancy to be filled at a later date.
VOTE: 5 IN FAVOR / 0 AGAINST
WHAT HAPPENED: The council voted to restripe Marguerite Avenue near
Sandcastle Drive.
WHAT IT MEANS: The intersection of the two streets will be changed
and restriped to make it safer to exit from Sandcastle on to Marguerite.
VOTE: 5 IN FAVOR / 0 AGAINST
