SUMMER SETS IN

Sue Doyle

It’ll be the kind of weekend that California is famous for: nothing

but sunshine in the forecast.

That is, after the morning fog lifts. And that’s expected to be gone

by sunrise. It is expected to be 70 degrees near the beaches and 80

degrees inland today and Sunday, according to National Weather Service

forecasts. Clear nights are expected with lows near 60 degrees.

And now that the population surge from the Fourth of July has

diffused, locals can enjoy extra room on the beaches. Lifeguards

anticipate average-sized crowds over the weekend, so there may even be a

chance of finding a parking spot.

However, this weekend won’t do much for surfers. Only 2- to 3-foot

waves are expected. Still, it’s a little better than Friday, when only 1-

to 2-footers were reported.

Mild surf is a good thing for swimmers. Lifeguards reported only a

handful of rescues Friday, said Tim Causee, dispatcher for the Newport

Beach Fire and Marine Department.
