Like the opening of every school board meeting, Ocean View School
District began with everyone standing and facing the flag for the Pledge
of Allegiance.
But with the students missing from the meeting because of summer
break, the pledge wasn’t quite the same.
“It lost that sing-songy flow without the kids,” board President Pam
Walker said.
Plumbing problems
Local surfer Wally Harvel reminisced recently about the old Tower Zero
as he watched it being removed from the Huntington Beach Pier last
Friday. The lifeguard tower, which was sold to a private owner, has a
storied history, some of which stank.
Harvel said there was a time when lifeguards who worked in the tower
had to urinate in buckets because it lacked indoor plumbing.
At least the new Tower Zero, completed in May, has restrooms.
