1. Some 300 guests in support of Planned Parenthood chapters for Orange
and San Bernardino counties came together at the Four Seasons Hotel,
Newport Beach, for the annual “Haute Wired Ball.” Coordinated by
Newport’s Darcy Lee, Teddie Ray and Katherine Sanderson, the event raised
funds for the organization’s health education efforts.
“The local agency assists some 20,000 young women in the community each
year with the goal of reducing teen pregnancy through responsible sex
education,” said Kimberly Custer of Planned Parenthood.
Custer added: “Funds from the ball will help support the Teens Ask Teens
Hotline, which gives teens access to free, accurate and anonymous
reproductive information.”
Assisting with party duties and fund-raising activities were Nancy Dahan,
Shannon De Grazier, Barbara Foster, Ellen Gordon, Jill Johnson-Tucker,
Barbie Knapp and Jene Witte. From left are Carly Brown, Rick Jack and
event chairwoman Teddie Ray.
2. The Sutton Place Hotel, Newport Beach, was the scene for the 15th
annual dinner and auction on behalf of the William Hall Master Chorale.
More than 200 guests and Hall supporters joined Chapman University
President Jim Doti and his wife Lynne, James and Sally Knapp, Tony and
Marion Montapert, Betty Belden Palmer, and Bill and Joan Simonoff for
dinner and an auction. Up for bids were more than 250 items, which helped
raise a record $85,000 for the chorale. From left are Sheri Shepard,
William Hall and Lynn Doti.
3. The social crowd turned out in force at The Center Club, Costa Mesa,
to hear the words of author Richard McKenzie and UC Irvine’s Walter
Gerken, professor of enterprise and society at the Graduate School of
Management. McKenzie -- who wrote the hot new book “Trust on Trial,”
concerning the antitrust breakup of Microsoft -- was the guest of PriVest
Bank of Costa Mesa. From left are PriVest Chairman Ben Crowell, President
David Brown and Walter B. Gerken.
4. The 39th annual Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Tennis Classic was a major
success for organizers, patrons, guests and the children served by the
guild. The Newport-Mesa-based event, which raised $75,000, attracted
hundreds of tennis lovers. And perfect weather provided the backdrop for
the tennis finals won by: Brett Hanson-Dent (men’s open singles), Peter
Smith and Kelly Gullet (open doubles), Kathy May Fritz and Marcin
Rozpedski (mixed doubles), and Donnie Visser and Peter Aldrich (men’s
open seniors, 35 and older). From left are guild President Denise
Cancellieri and Donna Davison, the incoming president.
5. From tennis on the courts to proper tennis attire, Denise Cancellieri
of Newport Beach represented the Adoption Guild at a recent in-store
reception celebrating the opening of Henry Cotton’s at South Coast Plaza,
Costa Mesa. The boutique offers a men’s lifestyle clothing collection
featuring casual attire. Tennis great Roy Emerson turned out for the
reception. Emerson, pictured far right with Cancellieri, joined Filippo
Arnaboldi, Kelly Lafosse and Arthur Cooke of the store’s management team.
6. Henry and Susan Samueli of Corona del Mar made major news this week
with the donation of $5 million to Opera Pacific. The philanthropic
family, whose wealth comes from the Broadcom empire co-founded by Henry
Samueli, earmarked $1 million of the grant for the new Opera Pacific
Fund, completing the $3.5-million campaign begun in August 1999. The
remaining gift will seed an upcoming endowment campaign. Opera Pacific
also has announced it will be headquartered in a new building in Santa
Ana. From left are Patrick Seaver, Susan Samueli and Opera Pacific
Executive Director Martin Hubbard.
