AIKIDO FOR KIDS
An eight-week class on aikido for youngsters will be offered by the city
of Newport Beach from 5 to 5:45 p.m. June 21 to Aug. 22.
Topics to be covered include throws, joint locks and pins. Along with the
enhanced movement coordination, participants will learn a philosophy of
nonaggression and harmony with others that can be applied to daily life.
Registration is $60 and the class is for youngsters ages 6 to 12.

NEWPORT BEACH AQUATICS CLUB
The Newport Beach Aquatics Club is a year-round team dedicated to the
development of competitive swimming.
Workouts will be divided by age and ability levels and will be coached by
Ted Bandaruk and All-American coach Rod Turner.
Registration will be taken on site and an equipment fee of $30 is payable
to the swim coach at the first practice, then every three months
thereafter.

BASEBALL CAMP
Newport Beach will offer two weeklong baseball camps for ages 6 to 12 --
from July 17 to 21 and July 31 to Aug. 4.
Each camp will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and each camper is asked to
bring water, lunch and a snack to each day.
A baseball, T-shirt and an evaluation will be given to each camper after
the camp is completed.
The program will focus on baseball fundamentals through drills and fun
games in a relaxed setting.

BASKETBALL CAMP
Newport Beach will host two youth basketball camps for ages 7 to 14.

FIVE-MAN BASKETBALL
Today is the deadline to sign up for Newport Beach summer league five-man
basketball, with the league running from June 19 to Aug. 31.
For those who miss the summer deadline, Fall Leagues will begin Sept. 11,
with the sign-up deadline set for Aug. 11.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Newport Beach has put together a youth basketball league that will begin
June 5 for ages 6 to 12.
The season will last 10 weeks. The registration fee is $40 per player.
Teams will play once per week and practice two days a week at various
locations.
Registrations will be accepted by mail, fax or walk-in by 5 p.m. June 2;
then again in-person at the practice site June 5.

ADULT, YOUTH BOATING
Newport Beach will offer four-hour beginners’ workshops, beginning July
1, for people ages 14 and up.
The 8 a.m. to noon workshops are designed for participants to become
familiar with paddling calm bays in touring kayaks. There will be an
orientation on equipment, safety guidelines and a three-hour on-water
session on paddling techniques, wet exits and in-water rescues.
Registration is $65. A wetsuit is required and rentals are available
through the Southwind Kayak Center.

CANOE/KAYAK CAMP
Youngsters ages 8 to 12 will learn basic kayaking and canoeing skills in
various weeklong camps offered by Newport Beach.
Registration for each session is $125 and there are 10 weeklong camps to
chose from.
Each day of camp, youngsters and their instructors will paddle to
destinations around Newport Bay, with the final day consisting of relay
races and hot dogs at the Newport Aquatic Center.
Campers must pass a five-minute swim test and they should bring a towel,
sunscreen, wind breaker and snacks to each camp. Locker rooms with
showers will be available.
A teen canoe/kayak will also be available throughout July and August for
youngsters ages 13 to 18.

CLIMBING CAMP
Designed for ages 9 to 16, this camp will teach proper techniques for
safe rock climbing, including how to tie proper knots, belaying protocol
and hand and foot technique.
The purpose of this camp is to push climbers to their limits, while
allowing them to expand their comfort zones, build confidence and develop
problem-solving skills.
Camps will be held at the ClimbX Indoor Rock Climbing Gym, 18411 Gothard
St., Unit 1, Huntington Beach.
Registration is $90 and the camps will take place throughout July and
August.

ROCK CLIMBING
Rock-climbing classes of all levels will be taught throughout July and
August at the ClimbX Gym, 18411 Gothard St. Unit I in Huntington Beach.

FISHING LESSONS
Newport Beach will offer a fishing seminar from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 7
at the Balboa Angling Club for ages 7 to 12.
Class topics will include how to tie fishing knots, finding and catching
bait, determining the best bait for use for specific fish and places to
look for different fish.
Included in the $22 registration fee is a sport fishing identification
book and an excursion to one of the instructor’s favorite fishing spots
for actual fishing.

CHEER CAMP
Everything from game-time cheers to pyramid building to stunts to
explosive pom-pom routines will be covered in a weeklong cheer camp, set
for 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 10 to 14.
Registration is $135, and youngsters are asked to bring a sack lunch and
water bottle.
On the last day of camp, parents are invited to attend the sprit
spectacular pep rally.

FLAG FOOTBALL CAMP
Youngsters will improve football skills in a safe and noncompetitive
environment in a weeklong camp by the City of Newport Beach.
Players will learn the rules of the game and improve their offensive and
defensive strategies.

suggested campers bring water and a snack each day.
The camps are from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 7 to 11 and Aug. 21 to 25, and the registration fee is $88.

GOLF CAMP
Young golfers ages 6 to 14 may learn game fundamentals including grip,
stance, swing, putting, chipping and driving, along with rules and
etiquette.
Each camper will receive a golf hat, T-shirt and evaluation.
The camps are sponsored by the City of Newport Beach and each camper is
asked to bring a snack, water and their own golf clubs to each day of
camp.

GOLF ETIQUETTE
Newport Beach will offer two classes for golf etiquette for beginners,
July 8 from 1-3 p.m. and Aug. 16 from 4 to 6 p.m.
The classes will offer enough information about golf rules and etiquette
to allow playing immediately.
The classes are designed for youngsters ages 8 to 12 and a $7 material
fee is payable to the instructor.

GOLF RULES AND ETIQUETTE
Two two-hour classes on golf rules and etiquette will be offered to
adults wishing to learn enough about the game to be able to play a round
of golf safely and correctly.

GOLF CLASS
Designed for the beginner and intermediate golfer, this Newport Beach
Golf Course class will emphasizes stance, swing and use of clubs.
Students may bring their own clubs or rent clubs from the course, and
each student will purchase one bucket of practice balls per lesson.

GYMNASTICS
Newport Beach will offer gymnastic training for ages 6 to 11 throughout
the summer.
The registration is $50 and instruction will be offered in balance and
tumbling, skills on the uneven parallel bars, balance beams, rings and
the vaulting horse.
Student to instructor ratio is approximately 8 to 1 and students
enrolling in intermediate classes must have instructor approval.

HORSE RIDING
There will be four horse-riding classes in July and August at Christian
Montessori School in Costa Mesa.
Youngsters are asked to bring a parent and learn to feed, groom, saddle
and ride ponies. Participants must wear hard-soled shoes with heels and
long pants.

ICE HOCKEY
Two Monday classes of introductory ice hockey will be offered at the Ice
Chalet, July 10 to Aug. 28, for ages to 6 to 8 and 9 to 15.
Registration is $84 and basic skating requirements to play ice hockey

ICE SKATING FITNESS CLASS
Ice Chalet in Costa Mesa will provide Wednesday night ice skating fitness
class from 7 to 7:30 p.m. July 12 through Aug. 30.
Registration is $84 and the class will provide instruction in ice skating
basics and a good workout.
Skate rental and free practice on the day of the lesson are included, and
each student is asked to bring a jacket, gloves and socks.

YOUTH ICE SKATING
The Ice Chalet in Costa Mesa will host four eight-week ice skating
classes throughout the summer.
There will be two classes offered for ages 6 to 8 and two classes for
ages 9 to 15.
Registration for each is $85, and skaters should arrive 15 minutes early for a class.

JUDO-JUJITSU
A 10-week judo-jujitsu class will be offered by the city of Newport Beach
from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning June 27 for youngsters ages 5 to 17.
Judo emphasizes the use of quick movement and backfiring of the
opponent’s own strength and leverage.
The class will be taught by 10-time Judo Kata U.S. National Grand
Champion Rick Bradley, who is also a defensive tactics instructor for the
Newport Beach Police Department.
Registration is $60 and classes will take place either on Tuesdays or

JAPANESE KARATE
The Japan Karate Federation, headed by chief instructor Shihan Fumio
Demura, will present classes of all levels for youngsters ages 5 to 15
during the summer.

LAWN BOWLING
The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club will have its annual Visitors Day
beginning at 10 a.m. June 3.
A free lunch will be provided and participants will have free use of
bowls, instruction of the game and an exposition short game by some of

ROLLER HOCKEY CAMP
A weeklong roller hockey camp will be offered by Newport Beach from 9
a.m. to noon Aug. 14 to 18 for ages 7 to 14.
Beginner- and intermediate-level youngsters will learn proper hand, stick

Campers are asked to bring a helmet with a cage, elbow and knee pad,
skates, athletic shoes, water and a snack to each day of camp.

SAILING CAMP
Newport Beach will offer eight-day sailing camps throughout the summer
for ages 8 to 12.
The camps will run Tuesdays through Fridays for two weeks and the
registration fee is $133 for each session.
On-water skills will be taught on new Sabots (8-foot-long sailboats), as
well as rigging and boat maintenance.
To ensure safety, please bring a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. No
after-camp supervision will be provided.

BEGINNING SAILING
Newport Beach will offer beginning sailing classes for adults throughout
the summer at Orange Coast College.
Classes include lectures and on-the-water practice in Lido 14 dinghies.
Students may learn the basics of sailing terminology, rigging, safety,
docking under sail, tacking, jibing and the five points of sail. Eighty
percent of class time is spent sailing, with two to four people per boat.

SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL
Sign-up deadline for the fall Newport Beach softball season for men,

SOCCER CAMP
Newport Beach will offer weeklong soccer camps throughout the summer.
The camps are for ages 6 to 14 and the fee is $96.

21, July 31 to Aug. 4, Aug. 14 to 18 and Aug. 21 to 25.
Players will learn various aspects of soccer, new techniques, skills and

ADULT SOCCER LEAGUE
Goal For It Soccer will offer a Wednesday night adult coed soccer league

A series of Mini Hawks introductory sports camps sponsored by Newport

SPORTS DAY CAMP
Newport Beach will offer eight five-day sports camps this summer for
youngsters who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade.
There will be arts, crafts, cooperative games and weekly special event
activities will also be incorporated.
Each week is built around a specific theme and there will be an excursion
to a theme park for each camp.
Registration is $120, $112 for youngsters not going to the theme park.
Campers need to bring a lunch, snacks and sunscreen. A camp T-shirt will

SURF CAMP
Both beginning and intermediate surf camps will be offered by Newport
Beach throughout the summer for ages 8 and up.
Wetsuits are strongly recommended and surfboards will be provided.
Campers must be capable of calmly handling themselves in the water and a
swim test will be given the first day of class.
The instructor, Scott Morgan, has 22 years of teaching experience and is
certified in CPR and first aid.
The first day of camp will meet at the 18th Street beach on the bay side
of Balboa Boulevard.

SURF CLASSES
Newport Beach will provide two series of instructional classes in the
areas of basic surfing and water safety from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays,
running from July 8 to Aug. 5 and Aug. 8 to Sept. 9 for ages 8 and older.
Classes will meet at the Newport Pier.
Registration is $63 and the first class will meet at the 18th Street
beach on the bay side of Balboa Boulevard.

TENNIS CLASS
Newport Beach tennis classes geared for players at all levels with all
levels of classes will be taught throughout the summer.
The registration fee is $50 per class, and each player must bring a new
can of tennis balls to the first session.
There are also Friday player strategy classes for doubles play from 9
a.m. to noon June 30 to Sept. 1 for $75, as well as serving-clinic
classes from June 28 to July 12 and July 19to Aug. 2, for $20 a course.

YOUTH TENNIS
Newport Beach will offer two levels of youth tennis classes for
youngsters of all skill levels.
Level I is designed for youths beginning to learn tennis. A new can of
balls is requested on the first day of class.
The registration fee is $30 for youngsters 4 1/2 to 7 years old and $50
for youths ages 8 to 17.
Level II will be on continued skill development and game play elements.

The Costa Mesa Tennis Center will offer a junior tennis camp for
youngsters ages 7 to 14 from June 28 to July 2.
Times for the camps are from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or from 11 a.m. to 1

SAND VOLLEYBALL CONTEST
Newport Beach will have two sand volleyball doubles tournaments: a
women’s competition June 10 and 11 and a men’s competition July 15 and
16.
Sign-ups are due by 3 p.m. the Friday before the tournament, and the
registration fee is $15 per person.
The tournament will take place at Corona del Mar’s Main Beach.
The men will have a AAA and AA tournament, while the women will have a AA
tournament.

COED INDOOR VOLLEYBALL
Advanced, intermediate and recreation divisions will be offered on
Thursday, Sunday and possibly Wednesday evenings during the summer
months.
All players must be members of the U.S. League Volleyball Association.
Additionally, Players Medical Benefit Fund will partially or completely
reimburse and render financial assistance for injured players.
Each team must pay a fee of $10 per match directly to the referee.

INTERMEDIATE VOLLEYBALL CLASS
The city of Newport Beach will offer a nine-week class on six-person
adult volleyball July 11 through Sept. 5 at Lincoln Elementary.
Classes will be from 6 to 8 p.m. or 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights and
the fee is $53.
The class emphasizes further development of skills as well as the
introduction of more advanced skills such as blocking, digging and middle
hitting.
There will also be advanced and intermediate adult beach volleyball
classes offered from June 25 to Aug. 20. The advanced class will take
place Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., while the intermediate class will
take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Corona del Mar Main Beach. The
fee for each class is $63.

JUNIOR WATER POLO
Newport Beach will sponsor a citywide junior water polo program open to
all third- through eighth-graders.
The program, coached by Ted Bandaruk, is in its 10th season with a
philosophy that “everyone plays.”
There will be on-site registration with a game schedule handed out at the
first practice.
A $30 equipment fee is due every three months and a $35 annual U.S. Water
Polo Assn. membership is required.

CdM SCENIC 5K
The 19th annual Corona del Mar scenic 5K run will take place June 3 at
Ocean Boulevard and Heliotrope Avenue.
The men’s 5K run will start at 8 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K start
at 8:20, the two-mile fun walk at 8:45 and the 1K kid’s “Dolphin Dash”
start at 9.
Registration is $20 for the 5K, $15 for the two-mile walk and $12 for the
“Dolphin Dash,” or $25 each for all entries on race day.
Registration includes a T-shirt and a gourmet breakfast featuring the
famous Restaurant Row.

SOFTBALL LEAGUES
Coed, men’s and women’s softball leagues will be offered by the City of
Costa Mesa for teams of all skill levels this summer.
Teams will play a 10-game season. Co-ed teams will play Sunday through
Tuesday, the women’s league will play on Wednesday’s and the men’s league
will play Tuesday through Friday.
Fees are $400 per team, plus $10 cash umpire fee per game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUES
The City of Costa Mesa will be offering a men’s adult five-man basketball
league for people of all skill levels beginning the week of July 10.
Play will be held at the Downtown Center and the league fee is $315 per
team, plus a $20 fee for the officials per game.

TENNIS CENTER ACTIVITIES
The Costa Mesa Tennis Center will offer an array of various social and
competitive tennis events for the advanced player, as well as the
beginner.
There will be a “Men’s Night” Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Matches
are played in a round-robin doubles format and balls and beverages will
be provided. Fee is $6.
Thursday nights will be “Ladies’ Night,” also from 7 to 9 p.m. Matches

Tennis leagues will start up on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations are
required, no partner necessary in the inter-club play format.
USTA men’s, women’s junior teams and adult senior leagues are being
formed.
The Costa Mesa Junior Open will take place Aug. 7-11, but there will be
other junior tennis exchanges throughout the summer.

GROUP TENNIS LESSONS

TENNIS CARNIVAL & OPEN HOUSE
The City of Costa Mesa and Hank Lloyd’s Orange County Tennis will host a
carnival and open house June 24 from noon to 4 p.m.
Prizes as well as the latest tennis technology will be available to all.
Manufacturing representatives will also be there to help demo a number of
different pieces of equipment.

MOBILE RECREATION
The City of Costa Mesa will hosting a Recreation on Wheels program for
youths throughout the area.
The program will allow youngsters a chance to play games, participate in
arts and crafts projects and visit with friends with the supervision by
recreation staff in their own neighborhoods.
The following streets have been identified as possible sites for the
“Park on Wheels” to visit this summer: Bernard, Charle, Center, James, La
Salle, Melody, Mission, Maple, Meyer, Plumer, Scott and Shallmar.

the schools prior to the start of summer vacation.

FLAG FOOTBALL
The Costa Mesa Youth Flag Football program for youngsters in grades 3-8
will kick off with an Aug. 19 registration day at Balearic Community
Center from 9 a.m. to noon.

September and a proof of age is required at the time of registration.

SPORTS PARK OPENING
The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Costa Mesa “Farm”
Sports Complex will take place July 1 at 1 p.m.
Featured at the opening will be free swimming at the Costa Mesa High
pool, information on upcoming youth services and sports, a barbecue,
family activities, soccer exhibitions and a family concert with the West
Coast Flyer’s Band from 5-7 p.m.

PACIFIC COAST AQUATICS
The Pacific Coast Aquatics program will offer a variety of year-round
swim programs for all ages and all swim types.
Learn correct stroke technique in a fun and positive environment.

The PCA is a member of USS Swimming and the USS Masters program.
Fees are $25 to register and $35 per month and activities will take place
at the Newport Harbor High Olympic Pool.

SUMMER SWIM LESSONS
The Downtown Community Center in Costa Mesa will offer Summer 2000 swim
lessons starting June 26.
The first of the two-week sessions will run from June 26 to July 7, while
