MAY
* May 27: The Huntington Beach Art Center presents its new summer
exhibition on contemporary landscape. In the main galleries will be
“Pandora’s Box,” with works from three Southern California artists, each
displaying different views of the traditional concept of landscaping.An
opening reception for the artists will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. June 3.
The Huntington Beach Art Center, 538 Main St. in Huntington Beach, is
open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, noon to 6
p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Free. 374-1650.
JUNE
* June 2: The music ministry of Community United Methodist Church, 6652
Heil Ave. in Huntington Beach, will present “Coffee House On Broadway.”
Starting at 7:30, this will be an evening of music including selections
from “Beauty and the Beast,” “42nd Street,” “West Side Story” and more.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for seniors and children. 846-9045.
* June 3: Huntington Beach Pier will be the host for Cal-King extreme
volleyball. Other events taking place include: baby oil slip ‘n’ slides,
swimsuit model search, extreme whipped cream volleyball and live DJs.
This free weekend kicks off at 10 a.m. on the south side of the

* June 3-4 and 10-11: Pro-Beach Hockey -- This third annual exhibition of
roller hockey will be held on the north side of the Huntington Beach
Pier. The events, which start at 10 a.m., are free to the public. There
will be grandstands, clinics and demonstration areas for youth
tournaments. Watch the six competing league teams play a 10-game regular

* June 4: Tom Hernandez conducts, in pops concert tradition, music from
Bach to rock, from Mozart to “My Fair Lady” and from Sousa to Sondheim.
This free event begins at 5:30 p.m in the Starshower Amphitheater at
Golden West College, 15744 Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach. Families

* June 4: Concours d’Elegance, the 15th annual car show sponsored by the
Huntington Beach Library Patrons Foundation, offers a salute to British
cars and motorcycles. Food, drink, music and entertainment will be
available. The event, which starts at 10 a.m., raises money for the
Childrens Resource Learning Center. Tickets are $10, children under 12
enter free. The Concours will be held at Central Park, adjacent to the
Huntington Beach Library, 7111 Talbert Ave. 375-5023.
* June 9: The Huntington Beach Playhouse, 7111 Talbert Ave. in Huntington
Beach, presents a contemporary interpretation of William Shakespeare’s
“Comedy of Errors”. The story, directed by Beverly Turner, is set over
the backdrop of New York in the disco ‘70s. Performances run Thursdays to

* June 11: The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach needs
volunteers for their project, titled “Keep the Beach and Bluff Areas
Clean and Beautiful.” All cleaning supplies and utensils will be
provided. You can check in on the bluff between Dog Beach lifeguard

* June 15: The Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and the Senior VIP Club
is sponsoring a Summer Celebration. The event begins at 1 p.m. at Rodgers
Senior’ Center, 1706 Orange Ave. in Huntington Beach. Tickets are $4 and
include lunch, entertainment and prizes. 536-9387.
* June 17: Billy K and the Starliners and the West Coast Pinups perform
at the Pier Plaza Summer 2000 Concert Series. The free event will start
at 1 p.m. at the public plaza and amphitheater located at the entrance to

* June 17-18: AVP Huntington Beach Open -- This is the fourth stop on the
2000 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Admission is free for the event,
which will be held on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. The
event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be a championship

* June 18: Gypsy Soul will perform their brand of Celtic folk-rock at the

* July 2: The free Summer Concert in the Park series begins at Huntington

* July 4: The city of Huntington Beach is holding its annual Fourth of
July Parade. The theme for this year’s parade is “Celebrating the
Century.” Employers are encouraged to sponsor an entry. Entry deadline is
June 2. For an application, call 374-4800, Ext. 444. The parade will
start at 10 a.m. down Main Street. There also will be a “tommy surf city
5K run,” featuring almost 4,000 runners. Register online at

* July 4: Huntington Beach hosts a pancake breakfast and entertainment at
Lake Park from 6:30 to 10 a.m. The cost is $5. 374-1535
* July 4: Huntington Beach will hold a Fireworks Extravaganza, a
star-spangled spectacular fireworks display, at Huntington Beach High
School’s football stadium. Preshow entertainment includes music and fun
for the whole family. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, and

* July 6: The city of Fountain Valley is holding its Summer Concert
Series. The free concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays in

* July 15: Robert Kyle performs Brazilian jazz and the Sombra Quartet

* July 17-30: Panasonic ShockWave Beach Games -- The two-week extreme
sports festival will attract athletes from across the globe and feature
surfing, in-line skating, BMX biking, wake-boarding, and skateboarding in

* Aug. 9-11: Summer Classic XI -- More than 300 horses and riders from
around the world will compete for trophies and prize money during this
11th annual jumping event at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian
Center, 18381 Goldenwest St. Reserved tickets for this fund-raiser,
benefiting the Huntington Beach Art Center, are available by calling
Cultural Services, 536-5258.
* Aug. 12: The 46th annual Huntington Beach Distance Derby -- Orange
County’s longest running road race event, starts and finishes at Pier
Plaza. For more information on the 10-mile run and 5-mile run/walk, call

* Aug. 19: Havana Sound will perform their Cuban Timba music and Orquesta
La Palabra will play Afro-Cuban salsa at the Pier Plaza Summer 2000
Concert Series. The event will be held 1 p.m. at the public plaza and
amphitheater located at the entrance to the Huntington Beach Pier.

* Aug. 19-20: The Pure Power Lubricants Offshore Grand Prix will be held
at Peters Landing Marina, 16400 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington
Beach. The offshore powerboat race is held over a 12.2-mile course with
racers running laps in courses from Sunset Beach to the Huntington Beach
Pier. The event will be held both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both wet
and dry pits are open to the public, as well as vendor and manufacturing

* Aug. 20: The MESP Day at the Beach Triathlon will be held at Huntington
State Beach. On race day, registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and the race
starts at 7:30 a.m. However, preregistration is highly recommended. For

* Aug. 20: Reggae Cowboys from Toronto play their Western-influenced
Reggae at the Pier Plaza Summer 2000 Concert Series. The event will be

* Aug. 20: Old World Beer Garden and Restaurant is having its Plum
Festival from 2 to 6 p.m. People are encouraged to bring homemade plum

* Aug. 26-27: Kaleidoscope, a multicultural arts festival, will be held
