The Huntington Beach City and the Ocean View school districts held board
meetings Tuesday night. Here is a sampling of the decisions made:
HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
ISSUE: EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT
Vote: 5-0
Summary: The school board agreed to hire J.K. Educational Associates Inc.
to do a three-year trend analysis of the Stanford 9 test results from
each school and the district as a whole.
A workshop covering the analyses and action plans based on the results
will be held in September for teachers and principals.
Payment for the services will not exceed $12,000. Each school will
contribute $500.
ISSUE: BUILDING SERVICES
Vote: 4-0, trustee Robert Mann abstained
Summary: The board agreed to support the Fair Competition and Taxpayer
Savings Act Initiative. The initiative permits the contracting out of
architectural and engineering services and allows cities and school
districts to use alternatives to state agencies for such services.
OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT
ISSUE: SALES TAX AGREEMENT
Vote: 5-0
Summary: The school board approved the pursuit of a sales tax
participation agreement between the city of Huntington Beach and the
district regarding the closed Rancho View school. Supt. James Tarwater
will send a letter to the city asking officials to reconsider the
agreement. The city shot down the idea in 1997.
District officials said a reasonable agreement would permit the district
to receive, for 20 years, 25% of any sales tax revenue after the first
$100,000 is collected. If sales tax redistribution measures Senate Bill
2000 or Senate Bill 1982 is passed, the district would withdraw its
request.
ISSUE: BOLSA CHICA LAND
Vote: 5-0
Summary: The board agreed to hire the Howard Rice Law Firm for
professional services between the district regarding Bolsa Chica
development.
The district owns a 15-acre parcel on the bluff that the California
Coastal Commission wants to preserve as open space. The district wants to
be able to develop the land.
