AZUSA - Heptathlete Melody Strauss and high jumper Tanya Hanson
finished third, while Rachel Fikse and the women’s 400-meter relay team
broke school records to highlight Vanguard University’s participation in
the Golden State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships
Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
Fikse’s discus throw of 119-10 1/2 bettered her own school record by more
than four feet, while the 400 relay quartet of Rachel Pearson, Shayna
Hauptli, Newport Harbor High product Autumn Puro and Hanson went 51.34 to
break a two-year-old Vanguard standard.
Pearson, Hauptli, Maribel Delgado and Puro combined to finish third in
the 1,600 relay with a season-best 4:06.62.
Hanson went 4-11 to earn a bronze medal and missed the school triple jump
record by 1 1/2 inches with a leap of 33-8, a personal record by a foot.
Hauptli was fifth in the 400, Delgado was fifth in the 800 and Darriann
Baeder was sixth in the pole vault for the Vanguard women, who finished
seventh as a team.
Josh Schultz was sixth in the 800 for the Vanguard men’s team, which
finished eighth.
