Baseball: OCC wins two at College of the Sequoias Tournament

VISALIA - Orange Coast College’s baseball team found things a lot

more hospitable up north.

The Pirates pounded out 25 runs in two victories Thursday at the College

of the Sequoias Tournament. They remain unbeaten in the tournament, and

they can be the only undefeated team if they win their last game today

against the College of the Sequoias, OCC will be the only unbeaten team

in the tournament.

In Thursday’s first game, OCC (15-20) scored six times in the fourth

inning en route to an 11-5 victory over Reedley. OCC Catcher Brian Murphy

led off the inning with a home run. Nick Orlandos and Corona del Mar High

product Eric Wiethorn then hit big OCC doubles. The Pirates sent 10

batters to the plate in the fourth.

Ryan France went 4 for 5 with a home run for OCC, but every Pirate who

played had a hit and scored a run. Freshman pitcher Sam Greco picked up

the win for the Pirates.

The runs carried over into OCC’s second game, where it hammered San Diego

City, 14-1, in a mercy rule decision. The Pirates had 21 hits in five

innings.

Blair Havens was perfect at the plate for OCC, going 4 for 4 with three

RBIs. His teammate, Chris Laws, also collected four hits in six trips to

the plate. OCC catcher Willie Keller had three doubles, and the Pirates’

Willie Claytor went 3 for 5. Another OCC freshman pitcher John Surdock

scattered seven hits in four innings, four of them doubles, for the win.
