1. BLACK BELT BASH: The Shuyokan Dojo will celebrate its 20th year
of serving the community of Costa Mesa at a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday
at the Mesa Verde Country Club, 300 Club House Road, Costa Mesa. A live
martial arts self-defense demonstration will be performed by Katlyn Cho,
Shuyokan’s first female black belt. For information, call the dojo at

2. GOING SOLO: Whittier Law School will hold a panel discussion on
developing a solo practice for law students and recent graduates. The
seminar runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the law school, 3333

3. ADVENTURES IN WRITING: Winners of the Orange County Public
Library’s writing competition for children will sign the results of their
work, a book titled “Adventures in Writing,” at 11 a.m. Saturday at
