CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s Josh Yelsey, Travis
Beardslee, Sean Fenton and Matt Moore each won two events Wednesday in
the Sea Kings’ 91-35 Pacific Coast League victory over visiting Estancia.
But the Eagles got a lift, literally, from senior Travis Chandler who
continued his rapid ascent in the three jumps with impressive marks.
After doing it last week against Laguna Beach, Chandler reached six feet
again in the high jump, matching his personal record and winning the
event by 10 inches. He won the long jump with a mark of 18-5, one inch
better than CdM’s Daniel Marshall. Chandler was the only competitor in
the triple jump, but he still turned in a solid leap of 38-3 1/2.
Chandler just joined Estancia’s track team two weeks ago and Wednesday
was the first day he didn’t set new PRs. Nevertheless, his progress is
creating a stir for the Eagles.
“Travis is doing a great job for us,” Estancia Coach Steve Crenshaw said.
“He literally came out of nowhere. The first time he did the long jump,
he jumped 18 feet. He just continues to get better with every meet.”
Unfortunately for Estancia (0-4, 0-3 in league), a thin lineup was
depleted even more by injuries and bad luck. Two Eagles, Alexis
Concepcion and Manny Avalos, were late scratches for Wednesday. Estancia
opted not to have varsity runners in the 100-meter and 200 races, and
both hurdles.
Moore won both of the all-CdM sprints. He took the 100 in 11.6, barely
past teammate Adam Hoyt. Moore took the 200 in 23.6. CdM’s Reed Glyer was
the best out of the three 110 high hurdlers. His teammate, Eric Fransen
finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
The two most exciting races of the day were both won by Beardslee. In the
800, Beardslee was running at a comfortable pace in the lead for the
first 600 meters. Estancia’s Luis Segoviano then charged up and briefly
took the lead on the last turn. But Beardslee regained the lead and won
with a time of 2:04.6. Segoviano’s second-place time was 2:06.6.
In the 3,200, Beardslee and Estancia’s Humberto Rojas were neck and neck
for the lead during the first seven laps before the field broke into a
near-sprint. Beardslee opened up some breathing space going into the last
turn before Rojas closed in and took the lead. But in the final stretch,
Beardslee turned on his afterburners and won in 10:58.3. Rojas finished
in 10:59.8.
Yelsey and Fenton had a much easier time capturing their two events.
Yelsey was victorious in the 400 (54.7) and the 1,600 (4:29.3). Fenton
was a double winner in the shot put (52-8) and the discus (164-2).
“For our highlights, there was Fenton’s discus,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner
said. “That was a good mark. Beardslee and Yelsey were also double
winners. They did a good job.”
