HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT WRAP-UP

Paula Pisani

ISSUE: INCREASED DEVELOPER FEES

Vote: 4-0, with trustee Catherine McGough absent

Summary: At Tuesday’s meeting, the school board approved an urgency

resolution for the immediate collection of developer fees. The resolution

allows the district to levy increased school facility fees on new

residential and nonresidential developments.

The money will be used to support the construction and renovation of

school facilities. In 1998, the district established fees of $1.93 per

square foot for new home development and 31 cents per square foot for new

commercial development. The resolution authorizes the district to charge

$2.05 per square foot for residential construction and 33 cents per

square foot for nonresidential construction.

ISSUE: DAY OF THE TEACHER

Vote: 4-0, with McGough absent

Summary: The board designated May 10 to be Day of the Teacher, in

conjunction with the state Legislature’s designation of the second

Wednesday in May.

“We’re blessed in this district with outstanding teachers, and I think

the community realizes this,” Supt. Duane Dishno said.

Parents often tell him how happy they are to have their children in

certain teachers’ classes, he added.

ISSUE: CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE WEEK

Vote: 4-0, with McGough absent

Summary: The board dubbed May 14 through May 20 as Classified School

Employee Week, in conjunction with the state Legislature’s designation

of the third week of May. The intent is to recognize classified employees

for their contributions and services to the district.

“The district’s classified employees -- many of whom are also residents

of our community and parents of children in our schools -- provide an

array of valuable services,” Dishno said. “These services directly and

indirectly support the educational programs of the district and

contribute immensely to the smooth functioning of our schools.”

Board members agreed.

“When I’m out visiting schools, I see real teamwork, whether it’s out on

the playground or custodians helping teachers,” trustee Brian Rechsteiner

said.
