Prep baseball: Eagles outlast Cathedral

COSTA MESA - Estancia High sophomore J.B. Goff came through in the

clutch with an RBI single in the 11th to propel the Eagles to a 4-3

nonleague baseball win over visiting Cathedral High of Los Angeles

Tuesday.

Goff’s looping liner sliced just out of the right fielder’s grasp to

score A.J. Perkins, who had led off the inning with a single and been

sacrificed to second.

The victory, the Eagles’ second straight, improved them to 4-6, heading

into Friday’s return to Pacific Coast League action against University.

Goff’s heroics did not come in time to reward Estancia starting pitcher

Armando Ortiz, who struck out 11 in 9 2/3 innings, before giving way to

C.K. Green.

The Eagles’ only error led to two unearned runs in the sixth, erasing a

3-1 lead.

“If we play catch, we win in regulation,” Estancia Coach Doug Deats said.

Sophomore A.J. Perkins created the two-run cushion with a two-run single

in the fourth for the hosts. He went 2 for 3 and also had a stolen base.

Senior David Akiva went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a two-out single to plate

Ortiz in the fourth.
