Estancia High’s baseball team gets two wins over cross-town rival Costa

Mesa in three days. Estancia pitcher Jose Cabrera gets himself out of

jams to pick up a 5-1 victory in the first game. Mesa’s John Schroeder

scores the Mustangs’ only run. Three days later, the Eagles’ Abel Flores

collects four hits and drives in three runs in a 6-5 Estancia triumph.

Costa Mesa’s boys swim gets a 101-54 victory over Estancia. Ryan Dandy

takes the 50- and 100-yard freestyle sprints for Mesa.

In her first time swimming in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle

races, Allison Alastuey wins both to lead her Mustangs’ girls swim team

to a 111-50 triumph over Estancia.

Newport Harbor reliever Chris Wills pitches four scoreless innings of

relief to preserve a tense 7-5 Sea View League win over El Toro’s

baseball team.

Newport Harbor’s Molli Mullen throws a no-hiiter for 6 1/3 innings and

gets the 3-0 shutout over Back Bay and Sea View League rival Corna del

Mar in softball.

Nicola Woody goes 2 for 2 and hits a two-run double to lead Costa Mesa’s

softball team to a 3-1 victory over Laguna Beach in its Pacific Coast

League opener.

Newport Harbor’s Cara Heads breaks her older sister Gina Heads’ meet

record in the Trabuco Hills Invitational with a throw of 133 feet in the

discus.Costa Mesa’s Erin Brown scores seven points in the third quarter

to help the South beat the North, 56-44, in the Orange County High School

Girls Basketball All-Star Tournament. Estancia’s Cyndi Richards hits two

free throws at the end to ice the game for the South.

Ten years ago

Corona del Mar’s boys volleyball team pulls out a 15-8, 15-13, 12-15,

10-15, 15-10 win over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the Sea View

League opener for both squads. Doug Hesse leads the Sea Kings with 28

kills. Ian Jubert has 17 kills for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor’s softball team pounds Costa Mesa, 12-3. Jenni Hall hit a

three-run double for Newport.

Newport’s Robin Russell pitches a no-hitters as the Sailors’ softball

team blanks Long Beach Wilson, 3-2.

Orange Coast College’s Kristin Heizer wins a pitchers duel by picking up

a 4-0 Orange Empire Conference win over Golden West that lasted 11

innings.

CdM’s Keith Miller breaks his own schol record in the pole vault by

reaching 15 feet, but the Sea Kings’ boys track and field team lose to

Saddleback, 95-41, dropping its first Sea View League meet in seven

years.

CdM’s girls track and field team defeats Saddleback, 98-28. Jennifer

Simon (long jump, triple jump), Heather Bray (800, 3,200), Shana Eddy

(both hurdles) and Denise Mahoney (high jump, shot put) wins two events

for the Sea Kings.

Ken Calvert shoots a one-under 36 to lead Estancia’s boys golf team to a

195-225 Sea View League win over Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor’s boys swim team finishes 10th in the CIF Southern Section

Relay Championships. Ross McIlwan, Dietrich Jewell, Rich Ruffin and Bobby

McAlister finishes thrid in the 4x50 breaststroke, the Sailors’ best

showing.

Estancia’s badminton team wins its own tournament. Huang Ly takes the

singles title with a 15-4, 15-0 victory over Rosemeand’s Ben Tang.
