YACHTS OF YESTERYEAR

The 230-foot Motor Ship Stranger was homeported at Balboa from January

1936 to October 1937. Captain Fred E. Lewis, the owner, docked the ship

in front of his estate at 2100 E. Balboa Blvd.

Stranger was built in 1916 at Stockholm, Sweden as a four-hatch

steam-powered cargo ship. In 1928, she was purchased by Allison V. Armor.

Twin Atlas Imperial diesel engines were installed and she was fitted out

as a luxury yacht.In the fall of 1937, Stranger left Balboa for the last

time. She was sold to William B. Leeds of New York who converted her once

again to a luxury yacht.
