ISSUE: PROPOSITION 26

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board of trustees approved a motion to formally express its

support for Proposition 26. The initiative, which will be on the ballot

in March, would allow local school general-obligation bonds to be

approved by a simple majority.

Supt. Marc Ecker indicated that school districts would be held strictly

accountable for money spent from a school bond.

ISSUE: DISTRICT’S LEGAL COUNSELVote: 5-0

Summary: The board agreed to renew its agreement with the law firm of

Bergman and Wedner. The renewal agreement covers the period of Jan. 1 to

Dec. 31.

The agreement indicated that the firm’s tasks will include providing

legal advice and periodic reviews of relevant court decisions to the

school board and the superintendent, and assisting in the preparation of

drafting district contracts.

The firm charges the district $170 per hour for senior attorneys, $150

per hour for associates and $75 per hour for law clerks.

ISSUE: FINANCIAL AUDIT

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved the 1998-99 financial audit completed by

Boceta, Macon, Workman and Associates. The audit includes financial

statements, supplemental information and recommendations.

The annual audit is a legally required process and document for every

public agency in the state.
