COSTA MESA -- Dennis Rodman had another brush with the law Wednesday
night when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Rodman, 39, was behind the wheel of his Bentley when he was stopped by
police at about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Paularino Avenue and
Bristol Street, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Don Holford. The department’s
DUI team was called in after the officers who stopped Rodman said the
former basketball star appeared to be intoxicated.
Holford said field balance and coordination tests were conducted, and
that Rodman chose a blood test as opposed to a Breathalyzer to check his
blood-alcohol level.
Security guards at South Coast Plaza reported to Costa Mesa police that
they saw Rodman leave The Clubhouse restaurant at the shopping center and
that he may have been drinking there, Holford said.
He added that Police Chief Dave Snowden stressed that there is no
tolerance for drunk driving in Costa Mesa.
Rodman, a Newport Beach resident, was booked in Costa Mesa Jail and his
bail was set at $2,500, Holford said.
The ex-Los Angeles Laker was arrested last month in Miami Beach, Fla. for
allegedly hitting Carmen Electra, to whom Rodman was briefly married. The
couple were staying at an upscale hotel when a neighbor heard them
yelling and screaming. Charges were eventually dropped.
Rodman was also arrested at Woody’s Wharf in Newport Beach in late
August. He was charged with public drunkenness and got into a fight with
another patron. Those charges also were dropped by the Orange County
District Attorney’s Office a month later.
