NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High senior Justin Newton converted
an assist from Tyson Wahl in the 21st minute and the host Sailors made it
stand up for a 1-0 nonleague boys soccer win over Costa Mesa Friday.
Wahl passed ahead from midfield and Newton, positioned about 12 yards in
front, booted the ball into the upper left corner of the net to help the
Sailors improve to 2-3-1.
Harbor, with Trey Meek a consistent catalyst, outshot the Mustangs, 15-3,
but Mesa keeper Cesar Porcayo kept the visitors in the game by making
eight saves.
Keeper Duke Burchell, a senior, had three saves to preserve the Tars’
first shutout.
Newport Harbor opens the South Torrance Tournament Monday at 10:30 a.m.
against West Torrance. The Sailors will then meet the Irvine-Muir winner
Monday at 3 p.m.
