Barnaby Jones, crack detective, never seemed like the kind of guy who

hung around on yachts in his spare time. But Buddy Ebsen, the man who

played Jones, was an avid member of the Balboa Yacht Club.

The Balboa Island resident started sailing and racing in the 1930s and

won the Multihull Transpac race with the catamaran Polynesian Concept in

1968.

To most of the world, however, Ebsen was Barnaby Jones, Jed Clampett from

“The Beverly Hillbillies,” and many other characters.
