JUNE HERKNER MERKEL
Born in San Francisco on June 22, 1917, June Merkel died in Huntington Beach on July 27, 2012. After working as head of the travel department of Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco and traveling the globe in that capacity, June married Frank T. Merkel in 1967. June and Frank lived in Costa Mesa, played golf, bridge, and hosted friends at the Santa Ana Country Club. They had wonderful neighbors who became treasured friends. June and Frank delighted in each other until Frank’s death in 2000. June volunteered her time and considerable corporate skills to the Hoag Hospital Auxiliary for 30 years. She successfully managed their thrift shop for 10 years. In 2011 June moved to Sunrise of Huntington Beach, where she made many new friends and was happy to receive visits from her friends in the area. She was predeceased by her sister Beth Beatie and her nephew Mik Beatie and is survived by her nieces Lucinda Beatie Ely and Karen Beatie Sivley and stepson Dudley B. Merkel. The family sincerely thanks the staff of Sunrise and Alpenglow Hospice for their compassionate, skillful care. June requested no services. June would be honored to be remembered by donations to Hoag Hospital Foundation, Newport Beach.
