National Night Out brings local communities, law enforcement together in name of safety

Community members and law enforcement agencies came together in the spirit of partnership on Tuesday, as local cities held events as part of National Night Out.
National Night Out events annually aim to forge close ties between law enforcement personnel and the communities they serve, hoping that teamwork results in safer neighborhoods.
The Fountain Valley police and fire departments, SWAT team members and the neighborhood watch showed up to the event held at Fountain Valley Sports Park.
Families also enjoyed food and drinks, children’s fingerprinting and games.
A walk through nature would be incomplete without some bark in the park, so canine demonstrations also took place.
At the safety fair at Bonita Canyon Sports Park in Newport Beach, event organizers took things a step further in getting McGruff “The Crime Fighting Dog” to attend the festivities.
Residents had access to educational materials on crime and drug use prevention, home security, child safety and the citizens’ police academy. Crime scene investigation, animal control and community emergency response team displays were also included at the Newport Beach event.
Costa Mesa hosted its family-friendly event at Lions Park, one which featured meet and greets with men and women in uniform, a caricature artist, face painting and a bounce slide.
At Central Park in Huntington Beach, residents were encouraged to meet with the police department’s K9, SWAT, motor and mounted units, and there was also a jail demonstration set up, alerting attendees to what might await those who break the law.
