Around Town: Chargers’ training camp starts in Costa Mesa

The Los Angeles Chargers NFL team is again holding its training camp at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa this year, and the camp is open to the public free of charge.

Fans are welcome to visit training camp and the fan fest area on one of 15 practice days, beginning Wednesday at 9 a.m. Though the camp is free, fans must pre-register for their free tickets and capacity is limited.

The camp concludes with two joint practice days with the 49ers, on Aug. 19 and 20.

Laguna Beach adds parking downtown

The city of Laguna Beach has leased 35 parking spaces at the site of the former Laguna Drug store for public use.

The private parking lot becomes available as public parking Monday through Friday after 5 p.m. and all day on weekends. Laguna Beach residents can park for free during those hours with a shopper permit.

The spaces can also be used as paid public parking by going through the city’s mobile parking app.

Six spaces will be allocated exclusively for residents with a shopper permit between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Laguna’s Short Street to receive speed bump

Short Street, which is near Laguna Beach High School, is scheduled to be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Work crews will be installing a speed bump. Parking in the area of the project will be limited and a detour will redirect traffic.

Promenade on Forest performances

The latest musicians have been lined up to showcase their talents on the performance deck at the Promenade on Forest this weekend in Laguna Beach.

Singer and songwriter Molly Bergman will be live in the downtown area from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Laguna Beach local Jason Feddy will then perform on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Feddy is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who also spent time as a radio show host for in-town station KX FM 104.7.

National Night Out in Fountain Valley

The Fountain Valley police and community services departments will host the city’s National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center, 16400 Brookhurst St.

The event is free to attend, and families will be able to see police vehicles and a fire engine. There will also be a K9 demonstration and SWAT team personnel will make an appearance.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m., with a movie in the park showing of “Trolls: World Tour†beginning at nightfall. Free food will be provided to the first 500 attendees.

Anyone dressed as a character from the featured movie will have a chance to win a prize from Mimi’s Jewelry.

Assistance League of Newport-Mesa thrift shop’s “Christmas in July†sale

Looking for the perfect Christmas tie for an office holiday party, or just seeking some winter holiday magic? Assistance League of Newport-Mesa Thrift Shop will hold a “Christmas in July†sale July 30 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at 2200 Fairview Road, in Costa Mesa.

Created in 1942 by women in the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa to support servicemen’s work in the community during World War II, the volunteer-run shop offers a collection of gently-used quality merchandise including clothing, accessories, shoes, furniture, books, toys and household items for men, women, and children of all ages.

CCF seeks to raise $90K for Anaheim’s underserved youth in online giving event

The Orange County Community Foundation — which connect local donors and philanthropists with groups whose missions and programs aligns with causes they care about — on Wednesday will host “ImpACT Anaheim†to support underserved youth and teens citywide.

The 24-hour online collaborative giving days aims to raise $90,000 for 10 area nonprofit organizations that offer youth a range of programs in STEM education, the arts, recreation and leadership development, among others.

Proceeds will go to the Anaheim Ballet, Anaheim Community Foundation, Anaheim Family YMCA, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Orange County, Chance Theater, Girls Inc. of Orange County, Higher Ground Youth & Family Services, Love Anaheim, Pure Game and Voice of Refugees.

Coast District congratulates Oakley on federal appointment

The Coast Community College District congratulates California Community College Chancellor Eloy Oakley on his temporary assignment as special adviser to federal Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

An alumnus of Golden West College, one of the Coast District’s three colleges, Oakley has close ties with Orange County and has held previous roles as a part-time faculty member and the district’s risk services manager.

Starting Monday, Deputy Chancellor Daisy Gonzales will assume the role of acting chancellor for the 116-college system, which serves 2.1 million students. Having served in the State Chancellor’s office for the past four years, Gonzalez is familiar with the work of Coast and other Orange County districts.

“Chancellor Oakley will have much to offer the national conversation on how we achieve equitable success for all of California’s communities,†Coast District Chancellor John Weispfenning said in a release Tuesday.
