Hawaiian luau planned

A summer luau with Hawaiian-style lunch and hula dancing by “Halau Hula O Lei Mohala†will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St. RSVP to (949) 715-5462 no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Donation is $4 for those 60 years and older for registered lunch participants and $5 for those younger than 60 years and non-registered participants.

Afternoon music social

The Susi Q is kicking off a new afternoon musical social on Aug. 27. Come and enjoy music from the ‘40s and ‘50s from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. A suggestion box located at front desk will be provided to make song selection suggestions. Participants can sit and enjoy the music or show their skills at ballroom dancing. Members, friends and neighbors are invited to be a part of this special event, sponsored by AristoCare Home Health Services, which will also provide a door prize. Free. Community Needle Art Group

Knitters or crocheters are invited to join a Community Needle Art Group once a month and collaborate on projects to benefit the community. The next meeting will be in the game room from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third. St. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Getty Villa excursion

Join the Susi Q on an excursion to the Getty Villa in Los Angeles for a Sept. 23 presentation of “Elektra,†the Greek tragedy by Sophocles starring Olympia Dukakis. A chartered Silverstate Coach bus will leave at approximately 4:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. showing of “Elektraâ€. Cost is $60 for members and $65 for non-members. Computer classes

Two new computer classes are being offered at the Susi Q beginning in August. The first class is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is titled “Introduction to Personal Computers.†This class is designed for the beginner. The second class is from 10:30 a.m. to noon and is titled “Introduction to the Internet and E-Mail.†This class will show you how to navigate your way around the internet and how to use an electronic mail program. Classes meet on Tuesdays from Aug. 24 through Dec. 14. Cost is $26 for each 16-week class. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Wii game lessons

Volunteer high school students are available on Mondays and Wednesdays to show you how to play the Wii game located in the lunch room. Stop by to learn how to use this fun video game from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This is a free event. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Emeritus College offers computer classes

Irvine Valley Emeritus will offer two new computer classes beginning Aug. 24 at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St.

Introduction to Personal Computers

Introduction to Personal Computers is designed for the complete beginner and includes a description of a typical personal computer system, including hardware components and software programs, an interactive discussion of various personal uses for a computer; explanations and demonstrations of word processing and electronic spreadsheet features; instructions for choosing desktop backgrounds and screensavers; and a discussion of computer file storage and retrieval. The instructor will offer optional projects, such as how to use the computer to write a letter and balance a checkbook. Students will be given plenty of class time to work on these projects. Those who do not yet know the keyboard will be given the opportunity to learn and practice touch typing. The class will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, from Aug. 24 through Dec. 14. Cost is $26.

Introduction to the Internet and e-mail

Introduction to the Internet and e-mail will teach the commonly used terms; the hardware and software needed for connection; programs (called “search enginesâ€) available to help you find what you are looking for; various search techniques; commonly used website components such as links and navigation tools, copying information from the Internet for personal use; printing from the Internet; bookmarking favorite websites; shopping online; security; and using an electronic mail program (set up an e-mail account, and sending and retrieving e-mail messages) and sending attachments (letters and photos). The class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays from Aug. 24 through Dec. 14. Cost is $26.

Computer assistance workshop

Basic Computer Assistance taught by Marianna Spoelder will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays in August at the Susi Q Senior Center.

The course will provide basic computer assistance for individuals who just need a few questions answered or want to learn how to use a PC with a Microsoft XP Operating System and be introduced to the basics of word processing, e-mail, digital photo (including Picasa software and downloading to a flash drive), and the Internet/Google. Cost is $10 per session or $20 for three sessions.

Sally’s Fund offers transport

Laguna Beach seniors may obtain a ride to the Susi Q Senior Center for lunch or activities by calling Sally’s Fund at (949) 715-1866. Those seeking rides should call ahead of time to make sure they can be accommodated. For all other services, such as transportation to doctor appointments, physical therapy, grocery shopping and errands, call (949) 499-4100.

Ping pong games at Susi Q

Seniors are welcome to participate in table top tennis, or ping pong, from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the multipurpose room. Bring your own paddle or use one of ours. Participants must wear non-skidding shoes. Free. To register, call (949) 497-2441.
