Breakers compete in CIF Individuals

Two singles players and two doubles teams from Orange Coast League boys’ tennis champion Laguna Beach High represented the league May 26 at the CIF Southern Section Individuals Tennis Sectionals at The Jack Kramer Tennis Club in Rolling Hills Estates.

The Breakers, OCL singles champion Ryan Gee and league runner-up Tristan Krogius, and league doubles champs Ethan Gee and Hayden Seitz and league runner-up Mason Lebby and Taylor Sokolovich, played tough draws early and were eliminated from the tournament.

Ryan Gee received a first-round singles bye, then dropped a second-round match to Pedro Fernandez del Valle of Corona del Mar, 6-1, 6-1.

Krogius lost in the first round to Justin Pham of Westminster, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles, Seitz and Ethan Gee received a first-round bye, then lost in the second round to Michael Shin and Jason Lee of Cerritos, 7-5, 6-1.

Lebby and Sokolovich fell in the first round to the team of David Lee and Mark Shaeffer of Newport Harbor, 6-1, 6-3.

The tournament marked the end of the season for the Breakers who two weeks ago finished runner-up for the second-straight year to the CIF-SS Division 4 title.

“The season was a mirror image of last season,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said. “We had several good wins over strong teams, and an undefeated league title. We squeaked out two, 10-8 [CIF-SS playoff] victories, one each in the quarterfinals and semifinals, to reach the finals before losing to a very strong team from Redlands.

“Our team has a lot of heart, and did as good of a job as they possibly could, and I’m very proud of them.”
