Romney, Obama get brief respite for July 4 holiday
After a whirlwind -- some would argue grueling -- week in the presidential campaign, with major Supreme Court decisions being handed down about immigration and healthcare, the next few days offer a bit of respite for the candidates.
President Obama is heading to Camp David for the weekend before returning to Washington on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he will host the traditional Independence Day celebration for members of the military and their families on the South Lawn of the White House. The barbecue offers a premier view of the fireworks on the national Mall.
After raising money in New York on Friday, unofficial GOP nominee Mitt Romney also plans to take the weekend off. His next public event is expected to be a July 4 parade near his vacation home on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.
Alas, there’s no such thing as extended time off in a campaign year. Obama will resume his effort to win a second term on Thursday with a bus tour of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Romney’s known calendar appears sparse, though his heavy fundraising pace is expected to continue in coming weeks.
Among other events, he plans a fundraiser with former Vice President Dick Cheney in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
