In 2021, he was recognized for exposing failures in Los Angeles County’s safety-net healthcare system that resulted in long, deadly delays to see specialists. In 2001, he was a finalist for a series revealing the doctors with the worst disciplinary histories in the country, using a database the federal government sought to keep secret. He also contributed to coverage of the San Bernardino mass shooting, which won the Pulitzer for breaking news in 2016. Before becoming a journalist, he taught English in Slovakia and Japan.
