Readers React: Mormon Church still wants to discriminate against LGBT people

To the editor: The Mormon Church offers to support adding “sexual orientation� to various non-discrimination laws. But rather than simply changing its policy or admitting that its prior opposition to gays was wrong, it requires a quid pro quo. (“Mormon Church tries to balance gay rights protections, religious freedom,� Jan. 27)

There has to be an exception, the Mormon leaders say, for any discrimination based on religious beliefs — “big enough to drive a truck through,� as someone was quoted in the article as saying. If that exception had been enacted as part of the civil rights laws, some lunch counters would still be segregated.

So a gay person is turned away by an employer who hates gays based on his religion. What will change?
