Readers React: Mormon Church still wants to discriminate against LGBT people

To the editor: The Mormon Church offers to support adding “sexual orientation†to various non-discrimination laws. But rather than simply changing its policy or admitting that its prior opposition to gays was wrong, it requires a quid pro quo. (“Mormon Church tries to balance gay rights protections, religious freedom,†Jan. 27)

There has to be an exception, the Mormon leaders say, for any discrimination based on religious beliefs — “big enough to drive a truck through,†as someone was quoted in the article as saying. If that exception had been enacted as part of the civil rights laws, some lunch counters would still be segregated.

So a gay person is turned away by an employer who hates gays based on his religion. What will change?
