Mitt Romney expected to raise more than $14 million in third quarter

A source close to the Mitt Romney campaign said the former Massachusetts governor’s third-quarter fundraising take was expected to be more than $14 million, though the final figure was still being tallied.

A campaign spokeswoman declined to release any numbers but noted that Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s total was less than the $18 million Romney collected in his first fundraising quarter. Perry’s $17 million, however, was raised in just half a quarter.

“It’s less than what Mitt Romney raised in the first quarter, and we feel good in the strength of our finance team and the fact that we are adding new people every day,†said spokeswoman Andrea Saul.

Romney appears poised to benefit from the decision by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to stay out of the race – on Tuesday, he picked up the support of Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone, a major Republican donor who had been urging Christie to run.

Candidates have until Oct. 15 to file their fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission.
