Letters: Sabotaging Mideast peace
Re “PLO official unsure about talks,†July 22
Secretary of State John F. Kerry must go into “peace talks†with the Palestinians and Israel only if the latter country is prepared to pull back on settlement expansion. Because Israel refuses to do so, we can be sure the Palestinians will not agree to accept the failed approach of the 2000 Camp David summit that put the blame for failure on them.
Unless we see an economically viable plan for a Palestinian state, Kerry’s efforts will look foolish and weak. It appears to the world that the tail is wagging the dog when the U.S. begs and pleads for the goodwill and support of a state dependent on it.
