Rescuers work to free trapped man in Miami garage collapse

Rescuers were working Wednesday to free a man trapped in the concrete debris of a garage that collapsed at a Miami-area community college, a construction accident that killed two workers and injured at least 10 others.

The trapped worker was stuck in debris after the roof of a five-story parking garage at Miami Dade College fell in a pancake-style collapse about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman Griselle Marino said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the trapped man was in critical condition and was being treated by surgeons.

“The trauma surgeons on the scene are among the best,” Marino said. “But a successful rescue becomes more critical as time passes because of the amount of debris.”

The injured were taken to hospitals, including three who were treated at the scene, she said. At least one person was in serious to critical condition.

The garage was being built at the west campus of the community college, which serves about 8,000 students. The west campus opened about six years ago. The garage, which was to have more than 1,800 parking spaces, as well as some classroom and office space on the first floor, was scheduled to be completed by year’s end.

There was no immediate cause of the collapse, Marino said.

More than 100 rescuers responded. Search dogs were being used to try to locate survivors, but all workers at the site have been accounted for, Marino said.

One worker was pulled from under a steal beam by four firefighters. His face and hands bloody, he was put on a stretcher and carried away, according to a video shot by the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department and provided to the Associated Press.

None of the injured has been identified.
