Jamestown archaeologists working with the Smithsonian Institution announced Tuesday that they have identified four burials found inside the footprint of the settlement’s 1608 church as prominent early leaders of the colony. The discoveries mark only the most recent time the archaeologists have revised the history of America’s first permanent English settlement since they began probing for the lost site of James Fort in 1994. -- Mark St. John Erickson
