GOP Sen. Vidak chalks up big lead over Democratic challenger in primary

Reporting from Sacramento — Republican state Sen. Andy Vidak showed a large lead over Democratic challenger Luis Chavez in Tuesday’s primary contest, a rehearsal for the November general election in which the two will square off again.
Vidak is a Hanford cherry farmer who won a special election for a Senate seat in July 2013 after Democratic Sen. Michael Rubio resigned to take a private-sector job.
Chavez is a member of the Fresno Unified School District Board.
Redistricting for the new 14th Senate District gave a distinct edge to Democrats, who make up 47% of its registered voters, while Republicans have 30%.
The race is one of three targeted by Democrats as they try to regain a supermajority in the Senate this year.
