The campus of Sacramento City College was locked down Thursday afternoon as police searched for a gunman who shot three men, killing one, authorities said.

The three men, all enrolled at the college according to school officials, were shot in a parking lot next to the college’s baseball field, near Sutterville and East roads, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

The shooting was believed to be triggered by a dispute among four men about 4 p.m., said Rick Brewer, a college spokesman.

“It started as a verbal dispute and escalated from there to fists, then to weapons,†Brewer said. “One young man pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his pocket and began shooting.â€

One man was pronounced dead and another man was taken to the hospital in serious condition. A third man’s injuries were minor; Brewer said he was grazed by the gunfire.

After the campus was locked down, police searched each building and evacuated those inside, emptying the campus by 6:30 p.m. Police declared an “all clear†at the campus about 7:45 p.m., officials said.

Police say the gunman, believed to be the only shooter, fled on foot. He was described as Tongan and wearing beige cargo shorts and a white T-shirt. It’s unclear whether the gunman was also enrolled at the college.

Classes were canceled Thursday evening but university officials said classes will resume Friday as scheduled.
