A 400-acre wildfire fueled by winds, low humidity and high temperatures was burning Tuesday afternoon near a high school in San Diego County, prompting evacuations.
The fire broke out at about 10:45 a.m. near Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch, a community east of Rancho Santa Fe, said Lee Swanson, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman.
Firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, dubbed the Bernardo fire, as it approached Fairbanks Ranch at about 2:30 p.m., Swanson said.
Mandatory evacuations were ordered in the Santa Luz and Camino Del Sur areas, Swanson said. Torrey Pines High School is being used as an emergency shelter.
The number of firefighters responding to the fire was unknown, Swanson said.
“We keep ordering more units,” he said. “It’s well in excess of 100.”
