An armed man was shot and wounded Sunday afternoon by police officers in San Bernardino after a pursuit through the city, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of domestic violence, which led to a chase with a man about 3 p.m., said Lt. Richard Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.

The pursuit came to an end near 28th Street and Glenview Avenue, when the man stepped out of his car and brandished a handgun, Lawhead said. The Sheriff’s Department asked San Bernardino police to respond and provide assistance.

The man initially held the gun to his head and had a brief standoff with police. A sheriff’s deputy and a police officer shot the man about 3:10 p.m. It was unclear what immediately led police to open fire, Lawhead said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was rushed to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Lawhead said the man has a bullet lodged near his heart and was undergoing surgery.
