A Riverside police officer fatally shot an armed suspect following a confrontation Friday night, authorities said.
The officer was on patrol when he saw a vehicle with several people inside parked near a gas station in the 3000 block of East La Cadena Drive, police said. The officer approached the vehicle in a marked patrol car with flashing lights.
That’s when the suspect got out of the vehicle, brandishing a gun, police say.
“The suspect engaged first and then the officer returned gunfire,” said Bryan Galbreath, public information officer for the Riverside Police Department. “The officer was not injured.”
The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle’s other occupants, a man and a woman, were cooperative and were treated as witnesses to the incident, Galbreath said. Both were released after questioning by police.
The gunman’s identity was withheld pending notification of family members.
