Four people were killed and three others injured Sunday after an SUV rolled over on Interstate 40 in the Mojave Desert, authorities said. Meanwhile, the search was on for the driver, who remained missing.

The California Highway Patrol responded to a 911 call about 4:45 p.m. regarding a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe that had rolled over and off the highway about 40 miles west of Needles, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s office.

The SUV had nine people inside, seven of whom were thrown out of the vehicle when it rolled over, the coroner said.

Four of the people thrown from the SUV – Latino men between 18 and 25 years old – were pronounced dead at the scene. The three other passengers who were ejected were flown to hospitals in Las Vegas, authorities said.

The driver fled the scene before officers arrived, officials said.

The identities of the four people who died will be released once next of kin are notified, the coroner said.
