Passenger in stolen car dies in Long Beach after police pursuit

A passenger in a stolen car died in Long Beach on Sunday night after a police pursuit that ended on California 103 with the car veering down an embankment, the Long Beach Police Department said.

Officers spotted the stolen vehicle about 7 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia Avenue, Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said in an email.

The driver refused to pull over and fled westbound on PCH. He attempted to get on the southbound 103 but lost control.

The passenger died at the scene, while the driver fled on foot and was taken into custody a short distance away.

Portions of PCH and the 103 remained shut down as of 10 p.m.
