LAX flights affected by deep freeze in Midwest and on East Coast

More than a dozen flights at Los Angeles International Airport were canceled and many others were delayed Monday because of a deep freeze that settled over the Midwest and East Coast.
About eight flights scheduled to depart from LAX were canceled Monday morning, according to a spokesperson with the Los Angeles World Airports. Seven other flights scheduled to arrive at the airport were also canceled.
The flights were bound to, or from, U.S. cities such as Chicago, New York, Boston, Indianapolis, Denver and Aspen, Colo. About seven flights scheduled for arrival from some of those same cities were also canceled, LAX officials said, adding that many others were delayed.
Alaska Airlines, Qantas, British Airways were also forced to divert flights to Aspen.
The ultrafrigid weather was blamed on a “polar vortex” that brought a mass of icy air down to the U.S. from its usual place over northern Canada.
