A worker was trapped in an underground vault that erupted in flames in Huntington Beach on Monday afternoon.

There was no immediate word on the worker’s condition.

Contract workers for Southern California Edison were in the vault at Tisbury Circle and Mistral Drive in Huntington Harbour when the accident happened about 12:17 p.m.

Several workers, who were called to a scheduled outage in the neighborhood, escaped from the vault. One did not.

Smoke could be seen rising from the vault and rescue workers were waiting for Edison to turn off power to the vault before entering.
