Dozens arrested in FBI, LAPD gang sweep in South L.A.

As many as six dozen gang members and associates were arrested early Tuesday as FBI agents and Los Angeles police officers descended on a South Los Angeles neighborhood.
The sweep involved dozens of agents and officers and was the culmination of a lengthy investigation into the activities of the 52 Broadway Gangster Crips, federal and local authorities said.
Several members of the gang have been indicted under a federal racketeering law. The gang is alleged to oversee drug sales and other illegal activities, including business robberies and street robberies of bank customers.
An indictment also alleges that the gang controls a share of the drug trade on skid row in downtown Los Angeles.
Authorities said the gang also has committed acts of violence, including slayings, to enforce its will.
The federally backed operation in the South Park neighborhood is the latest in a series of efforts by the FBI and U.S. attorney’s office to crack down on gang crimes and take high-ranking gang members off the streets.
