Woman injured in explosion at propane facility in Huntington Beach
A woman was seriously injured early Wednesday after an explosion inside a storage container at a propane facility in Huntington Beach, officials said.
The woman suffered injuries “consistent with a propane explosion†and was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, said Battalion Chief Mike McClanahan of the Huntington Beach Fire Department.
The explosion was reported about 5:26 a.m. at Huntington Beach Propane in the 18900 block of Gothard Street. The blast, which could be heard a half-mile away, occurred inside a box similar to a large shipping container, McClanahan said.
When firefighters arrived, they dragged the victim out of the rubble.
“At this time, there is no potential for another explosion,†McClanahan said.
TV footage showed debris scattered throughout the propane facility. The blast damaged two vehicles, a block wall and two other containers. A window at a nearby business was damaged.
A night watchman told investigators he noticed activity inside the container when the blast occurred.
Firefighters are investigating the explosion and trying to determine how it occurred, McClanahan said. Fire officials believe the blast was not related to the propane operation.
As well as selling propane tanks, the business offers storage in one of its 100 containers on the property, fire officials said.
