County law enforcement nets hundreds of DUI arrests in holiday lead-up
Law enforcement agencies across Los Angeles County announced this week that they had arrested 1,366 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in an 11-day span earlier this month.
The effort between Dec. 13 at 12:01 a.m. and Dec. 23 at midnight is part of a winter crackdown on drunk drivers and exceeds the 1,298 arrests issued over the same 11-day period in 2012, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday that the California Highway Patrol’s maximum enforcement period runs from 6 p.m. Christmas Eve through midnight on Christmas.
“All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts,†the Sheriff’s Department said.
[Updated 1:15 p.m. PST Dec. 25: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has also been embarking on a winter holiday crackdown on drivers under the influence. In a news release, sheriff’s officials in Orange County said that from 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 13 through midnight Dec. 19, preliminary numbers show 315 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.]
