A steel beam that fell at a construction site injured two workers on the 405 Freeway early Wednesday and forced the closure of all lanes in both directions near the 605 Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
The two workers were transported to a local hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known, CHP officer Denise Quesada said.
It was not clear whether the beam was blocking the roadway or whether lanes were closed for an investigation by state workplace-safety officials.
The 405 Freeway at the busy 605 interchange near Long Beach was ordered closed until 8 a.m., according to a SigAlert issued after the incident. Drivers on the 405 were being diverted onto the northbound 605.
Quesada urged drivers to either use the 605 Freeway or avoid the area altogether.
