Laguna Beach sophomore Claire Rietsch routed Corona del Mar senior Brittany Holland, 6-0, and then beat Jillian Braverman, 6-2, and blanked Rachael Miller, 6-0, to lead the Breakers (7-0, 1-0) over the visiting Sea Kings (3-4, 0-1).

Rietsch improved her season record to 14-1, with her only loss coming against Palm Desert’s No. 2 player, Brittany Blalock.

The Breakers, ranked No. 3 in the Southland by The Times, also got two wins each by Lorren Butterwick and Katie Ochwat. Butterwick defeated Braverman, 6-0, and Miller, 6-3, but lost to Holland, 6-3. Ochwat beat Braverman, 6-3, and Miller, 6-4.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 5 by The Times, won six of nine doubles sets, including a sweep by 6-0 scores by the No. 1 team of Juliette Mutzke and Jill Damion.

Six Laguna Beach players were late to a practice session Wednesday, and three were benched against Corona del Mar, including No. 3 singles player Lauren Thigpen, with the others to sit out next week, according to Breakers Coach Brian Ricker.

“I just don’t believe in punishing the whole team for a bonehead thing by a few others,†he said.

Tania Mahtani and the freshman doubles team of Rika Tatsuno and Stephanie Chen also won three sets to help the Panthers win five of six second-round sets in the round-robin competition, which they led, 9-3, after two rounds of play. The doubles team of Erica Schweyer and Emily Aston won two of three sets for the Panthers. Peninsula won six sets by 6-0 scores.

“We got drilled pretty good today,†Corona del Mar Coach Scott Feichter said.

Holland won two of three sets in singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of Juliette Mutzke and Jill Damion won three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, for the Sea Kings, who face No. 3 Laguna Beach on Thursday.
