CITY SECTION INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Balboa Tennis Center
Junior Bobby Tam of Los Angeles Belmont High defeated senior Dan Escobedo of Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 6-3, 6-2, to win the City Section Individual singles championship at Balboa Tennis Center in Encino.
Tam, seeded third out of 64 players, did not lose a set in five matches. He broke Escobedo four times and ended the match by serving an ace down the tee. Escobedo, who was unseeded, showed nerves and committed 24 unforced errors.
Tam won the individual doubles title two years ago with his older brother, Norman, and has lost only one high school singles match - in the semifinals of last year’s Individual tournament to eventual champion Artem Fatkhiev of L.A. Fairfax.
“I played him once before at a junior tournament in Whittier in January, so I knew he was going to hit the ball hard,†Tam said. “My strategy was to be patient, keep the ball in the court and let him make the mistakes. I expected it to be much closer.â€
Top-seeded Isaac Adrabi and Chad Gerber of El Camino Real completed an undefeated season by beating unseeded Adam Regele and Jarome Rubi of Sun Valley Poly, 6-2, 6-2, in the doubles final. Adrabi and Gerber lost one set in five tournament matches.
